Prince Rupert - Smithers: Port, Skeena and the Interior
This section is available in English and Deutsch
Driving time: approximately 3 hours, plus stops.
What a transition we will experience on this drive. Follow the Skeena River for nearly 270km between the ocean and the town of Hazelton, a town billed as the Totem Pole Capital of the World. We will see the landscape change between wilderness and a busy port shipping Canadian resources around the world. First Nations dominates the culture along this route.
The chances to see wildlife are excellent including bears and eagles. We'll learn about the Kemode Bear, or spirit bear as it is often referred to. There are several interesting towns worth stopping in to visit. Terrace provides a great rest point about halfway along this drive.
If you are crossing the waters to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island or the Queen Charlotte Islands, then Prince Rupert is the launching point or the arrival point if coming from the Island.
