Parksville - Port Hardy: mid and northern Vancouver Island

This section is available in English and Deutsch

Driving time: approximately 4-5 hours plus stops.

Follow Highway 19 connecting the northern tip of Vancouver Island with mid Island communities. Port Hardy is the terminus for the BC Ferry service to Prince Rupert on the central coast of the mainland.  The wonderful drive is ever changing and a true “wilderness in your car” experience.  Zoom through mid island on a fast twinned freeway, stopping at waterfront communities that take your interest and that connect to smaller islands like Quadra.

Between Campbell River and Port Hardy drive in relative isolation, filled with beautiful mountains, tall trees and active loggers.  A few communities along the way will surprise.  Keep an eye out for wildlife.

Attractions:

  • Comox and Courtenay
  • Campbell River
  • Strathcona Park
  • Nimpkish Lake
  • Access to smaller gulf islands
  • Port McNeill
  • Sointula and Alert Bay
  • Port Hardy
  • BC Ferry to Prince Rupert

At the southern end of this driving tour, connect to Tofino or from Parksville to Victoria. The BC Ferry coonects to the Prince Rupert to Smithers tour on the mainland.
