Kamloops - Hope: Highway #1 through the Fraser Canyon

This tour is available in

Driving time: approximately 3 1/2 hours plus stops.

Follow the original TransCanada Highway route number 1.  The Fraser River is your companion into the Fraser Canyon and its rushing waters.  Stop and ride the Hells Gate Airtram and see the feirce whitewater and steep climbs salmon have to battle during their spawn run.  Visit important historical sites that led to the development of Canada’s west. This route is extremely dramatic with steep cliffs. Keep your camera nearby and take advantage of the pullouts at viewpoints.

This route is a slower way to travel between Kamloops and Hope than the Coquihalla but is definitely more scenic and has more points of interest. So if you have a couple extra hours to spare and you don't want to pay the toll on the Coquihalla - the original Highway #1 route is the way to go.

At its northern end, Highway 1 joins Highway 97 about 40 minutes west of Kamloops.
